Is a .ai Domain Worth It in 2026?

.ai is the default extension for AI companies, with a price to match: a two-year minimum term and renewals far above .com. What it really costs, who runs it now, and when it is worth paying.

The short answer. A .ai domain is worth it when the AI signal matters to your brand and the name you want is still free. Budget for it properly: every registration and renewal covers at least two years, and a year costs from about $60 to about $100 depending on the registrar. If the .ai you want is gone or the price does not make sense, .si and .io are the usual alternatives.

What .ai is

.ai is the country code extension of Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It has been open to anyone worldwide for years, and since the AI boom of 2023 it has become the default extension for AI products.

In January 2025 the registry moved onto Identity Digital's systems, the same registry operator behind hundreds of other extensions. For you that mostly means .ai now behaves like a large mainstream extension: standard registrar support, reliable registry data and RDAP availability lookups.

What it really costs

Two things make .ai expensive.

The two-year minimum. You cannot register or renew a .ai for a single year. Every payment covers at least two.

The yearly price. In Axath's registrar price table, one year of .ai costs:

RegistrarFirst yearRenewal
Cloudflare$60$60
Namecheap$69.98$89.98
Porkbun$82.70$82.70
GoDaddy$89.99$99.99

So the first bill is roughly $120 to $200, and the gap between registrars adds up: over five years it can be several hundred dollars for a single name. .com vs .io vs .ai has the five-year totals. Prices change, so check the live ones on the .ai page.

Why Anguilla cares

.ai is not a side project for Anguilla. Local reports put .ai income at about EC$230 million (about US$85 million) in 2025, close to half of the government's revenue. The two-year minimum helped: the wave of names registered in 2023 came up for renewal in 2025 and most of them renewed.

That dependence cuts both ways. It gives Anguilla every reason to keep .ai stable, open and well run. It also means prices are unlikely to fall.

Does the switch from AI to SI change this?

On 29 September 2026 Executive Order 14434 told US federal agencies to say "Super Intelligence" and "SI" instead of "artificial intelligence" and "AI". The market reacted at once: within 25 hours of the President announcing it at the UN, daily registrations of Slovenia's .si overtook .ai, and 46,066 .si names were registered in September.

For a .ai decision today, it changes less than the headlines suggest:

  • The order changes government vocabulary, not the law or how people talk. It does not rewrite existing statutes or contracts, and nobody knows yet whether "SI" will catch on outside Washington.
  • .ai's signal is built. Three years of AI companies on .ai mean visitors already read it as "AI product". A .si still reads as Slovenia to most people.
  • The .si rush is mostly investors. Only around 3% of new .si names at Hostinger relate to AI at all, and about half of the early registrations at one registrar went straight onto the aftermarket.

What it does change is the fallback. If the .ai you want is taken or premium, a .si twin is now a credible alternative rather than an odd one, at a fraction of the price. Holding both for a name you care about costs little, and stops someone else from holding the other. .si vs .ai compares the two in detail.

When .ai is worth it

  • The AI signal is the point. For an AI product, .ai tells visitors what you do before they read a word.
  • The name is free at the standard price. Short words are mostly taken or sold as premium names; check before you fall for one.
  • You will keep it. The two-year term rewards names you mean to hold.

When it is not

  • The name is premium. A premium .ai can cost thousands a year to renew. The price window shows whether a registry premium applies.
  • The AI part is incidental. A general business pays .ai prices for a signal it does not need.
  • A cheaper twin works as well. .si gives a short, open alternative with a growing superintelligence association, from about $12 a year.
