How to Register a .si Domain

A .si domain takes a few minutes to register from anywhere in the world. Check that the name is free, compare registrar prices, register it, then point it where it needs to go. Plus what to do when the name you want is already listed for sale.

The short answer. Check the name, pick a registrar that sells .si, register it with your normal details, and set its nameservers or DNS records. There is no residency requirement and no premium tier, so the process and the registry fee are the same from any country and for any name.

Step 1. Check that the name is free

Type the name into the Axath checker and select .si. The answer comes from the registry's own RDAP service, so a name shown as available really has no registration behind it. Checking a list is just as quick: paste every candidate at once and compare.

Do this before anything else, and do it quickly. In September 2026, after the US government renamed AI to "Super Intelligence", 46,066 .si names were registered in a single month, and on some days more than ten thousand. Names are given out first come, first served, so a name that is free this morning can be gone by the evening.

If the name you want is taken, try a short variation, or check it in .ai, .io and .com at the same time to see where it is free.

Step 2. Know the rules

The .si rules are short:

  • Anyone can register, private person or company, from any country.
  • Two characters minimum.
  • Letters, digits and hyphens, the same as most extensions.
  • First come, first served, with no premium tier.
  • The name must be registered in good faith and must not infringe anyone else's rights, such as a trademark.

Step 3. Compare prices

The registry, Register.si, charges every registrar a flat €10 a year for registration and renewal. There is no premium tier, so a short or popular word costs the same at the registry as any other. What differs is the registrar's margin. At the time of writing:

RegistrarFirst yearRenewal
Dynadot$12.05$13.51
Hostingerabout $12check at checkout
Porkbun$20.42$17.53

GoDaddy did not offer .si in early October 2026, so if your other domains live there you will need a second registrar. Look at the renewal as well as the first year. The .si page shows the current price at each registrar side by side, and the price window on any checked name lists live quotes for that exact name.

Step 4. Register it

At the registrar, add the name to your cart and enter your contact details. Use an email address you will keep: it is where renewal reminders and transfer codes go. Turn on auto-renew if you plan to keep the name; country extensions drop like any other when they lapse.

Step 5. Point it somewhere

A new .si name does nothing until it has DNS. Either keep the registrar's nameservers and add records there, or switch to your DNS host's nameservers. Our guides cover the common providers, for example how to change nameservers in Cloudflare and how to add MX records in Cloudflare for email.

If the name is already listed for sale

Many of the .si names registered in the September rush were bought to resell: about half of the early registrations at one registrar went straight onto the aftermarket. If a marketplace shows the name you want:

  • Check the registry first. Make sure the name really is registered before you pay anyone for it. A listing for a free name is just an expensive way to register it.
  • Price it against the alternatives. The registry fee is €10 a year. A listing at several thousand dollars only makes sense if no similar free name would do.
  • Use escrow. Pay through the marketplace or an escrow service, never by direct transfer, and only release the money once the name is in your account.

Common mistakes

  • Not checking the .com twin. If someone else holds the same name in .com, part of your email and traffic will reach them. Check it before you commit.
  • Comparing only first-year prices. Renewal is what you pay every year after.
  • Forgetting auto-renew. A lapsed .si can be registered by anyone once it drops, and in today's market someone will.
  • Waiting. With thousands of .si names registered a day, a shortlist kept in a notes app is a shortlist someone else registers.
